Korwin-Mikke denounces EU

Janusz Korwin-Mikke, the presidential candidate of the ultra-liberal, rightist Union of Real Policy (UPR) met with his potential voters in Gdansk. Korwin-Mikke called for overthrowing the Polish Third Republic, just as the People's Republic had been overthrown, in order to check increasing bureaucracy. He criticised the ruling Solidarity Election Action, the Solidarity trade union, as well as the "socialistic" European Union. "Down with the paedophiles in Brussels," called Korwin-Mikke.

Kwasniewski leads the presidential polls

President Aleksander Kwasniewski continues to be the front runner in the election ranking, having secured 64% of public support in the latest survey conducted by the public opinion firm OBOP. Support for Kwasniewski has dropped by two percentage points since July. Independent candidate Andrzej Olechowski trailed a distant second, having gained the favour of 10% of those surveyed, and Marian Krzaklewski, the leader of the Solidarity Election Action (AWS) was placed third with 8% support. Former president Lech Walesa and the farmer's trade union Samoobrona (Self-defence) leader Andrzej Lepper would be voted for by 3% of the respondents each. Support for Walesa rose by one percentage point, whereas for Lepper it dropped by one percentage point from the July figure. The Polish Peasant Party (PSL) candidate, Jaroslaw Kalinowski, was backed by 6% of potential voters, one percentage point more than in the previous survey. Jan Olszewski, the leader of the right-wing opposition Movement for the Reconstruction of Poland (ROP), Janusz Korwin-Mikke (the leader of the radical liberal Real Politics Union (UPR), would be backed by 2% of voters each, the same as in July. Also the number of supporters of Jan Lopuszanski, the leader of the right-wing opposition Polish Agreement (PP) remained unchanged with 1% of would-be voters willing to back him. None of the respondents to the poll said they were willing to support the remaining candidates: Marek Ciesielczyk, Piotr Ikonowicz, Tadeusz Wilecki, Marian Antosz, Dariusz Grabowski, Bogdan Pawlowski, Kazimierz Switon, and Boleslaw Tejkowski. Eighty-three percent said they would participate in the presidential elections in October, while 10% said they would not, and 6% were undecided.

PO joins up with UPR before the elections
The Civic Platform (PO) joined with the ultra-liberal Real Politic Union (UPR). The agreement signed by one of PO's leaders Donald Tusk and UPR's Janusz Korwin-Mikke provides for UPR's politicians to run on PO's lists for the Sejm and Korwin-Mikke himself to run for the Senate. Although the statement that PO issued said the alliance would strengthen the party, it is possible that the controversial figure of Korwin-Mikke would rather make some potential supporters of PO reconsider their choice. PO had earlier signed a similar agreement with the Conservative Peasant Party (SKL), a former member of the ruling Solidarity Election Action (AWS) alliance. bb, kp
